fantasy stat Thursday - divisional scoring
January 3rd, 2008 by Iani don’t know that this relates well to the fantasy game but a quick look at some names showed some interesting results right off the hop. 10 of the top 15 names are from the Southeast division including the top 4. it seems that the SE has been beating up on each other as Tampa (4 names in the top 15), Atlanta (2 names), Florida (1 name), Carolina (1 name), and Washington (1 name) all tend to save their goal scoring for big divisional games.
that’s going to affect who you want on your fantasy roster too. it’s been fairly obvious that Carolina has burst open for a ton of extra offense this year, Tampa has had this potent offensive attack for several years now and there are potent attacks in Washington, Florida, and Atlanta led by guys whose names i don’t need to mention.
1) Vincent Lecavalier 35 pts in 19 divisional games, 58 pts total in 40 GP this season - some are calling Ilya Kovalchuk the best player in the game right now but i’m pretty sure that Vinny or Sid would have an argument with that.
2) Ilya Kovalchuk 31 pts in 15 divGP, 57 in 41 total GP this season - well, maybe those guys have a point, 31 pts in 15 divisional games is significant.
3)Martin St. Louis 27 pts in 19 divGP, 45 pts in 40 GP - i’ve always liked him and he’s producing lots in big games.
4) Vinny Prospal 25 pts in 19 divGP, 39 pts in 40 GP - not a lot of production in non-divisional games. interesting.
5) Joe Thornton 22 pts in 20 divGP, 46 pts in 39 GP - the first of only 2 from the Pacific Division amongst the top 15.
6) Henrik Sedin 22 pts in 16 divGP, 40 pts in 40 GP - the first of only 2 from the Northwest Division.
7) Mike Ribeiro 21 in 16 divGP, 43 in 38 GP - at the start of this year i certainly wouldn’t have pegged him to be anywhere near this list.
Dany Heatley 21 in 13 divGP, 53 in 39 GP - the only rep from the Northeast in the top 15.
9) Alex Ovechkin 20 in 17 divGP, 50 in 40 GP - great hockey player, should either learn to grow a beard or audition for that tv Caveman comedy.
10) Jarome Iginla 20 in 16 divGP, 55 in 41 GP - i’m not a Flames fan but i see a lot of their games on tv and well, how can anyone not be a fan of Iggy, he does everything.
11) Olli Jokinen 20 in 16 divGP, 40 in 40 GP - FLA’s only rep on this list, and their best player.
12) Brad Richards 20 in 19 divGP, 34 in 40 GP - i don’t understand why this guy gets so much ice time when his +/- buries him EVERY SINGLE YEAR.
13) Cory Stillman 19 in 16 divGP, 39 in 39 GP - he’s shown in his career that if you give him ice time then he’ll put up a pt/game.
14) Marian Hossa 19 in 15 divGP, 38 in 36 GP - another star in ATL, so why aren’t they in playoff position?
15) Ray Whitney 19 in 17 divGP, 41 in 42 GP - yep, Carolina sure is scoring eh? interesting that neither Brind’amour nor Staal make the top 15.
there weren’t any Atlantic division guys on that entire list. the goaltending must be really good there i guess. with Brodeur, DiPietro, Lundqvist, Biron and whoever the Pens throw out there then you could make an argument that the best goaltending in the league is in the Atlantic. i’m not making that argument … yet.
