holiday armchair

February 18th, 2008 by Ian

i just wanted to note a couple things quickly that i noticed of late and may have some value for some guys on this the first ever Louis Riel Day here in Manitoba.  it’s been nice to have the day off but tomorrow it’s back to slugging at work.

Teemu Selanne became the Ducks all time scoring leader last night and Teemu is absolutely an all time fave from his years her in the Peg.  there were a couple interesting things that i noted from that game though.  i agree that Teemu will be passed by both Getzlaf and Perry eventually and Getzlaf may go down as the best Duck ever.  i also noted that Ryan Carter got some significant ice time at the same time as Selanne and Kunitz last night and if that continues then it’ll mean some nice unexpected short term stats for Carter.

as i write this on late Monday afternoon i note that Sean Bergenheim got another goal and assist on Monday.  he’s getting some opportunity and if that continues you’ll hear plenty from him for the rest of this year and beyond.

Cristobal Huet was supposed to get the start for the Habs yesterday so i didn’t bother to put Price in my lineup.  i hope that others didn’t miss out on those stats (and needed them) like i did.  maybe they’ll keep running him out there til he loses, the Habs certainly have been on a downswing of late.

Roman Hamrlik returned recently and that has meant less dependance on guys like Francois “le cube” Bouillon.  that’s a good thing since they don’t want to rely on him too much.

Jeff Carter led everyone in the game in SOG yesterday.  i believe he’ll be a restricted FA this season and teams are going to be banging on his door.  i still say the Canucks take a run at him just to get the Flyers back for taking a run at Ryan Kesler last year.  if they’re successful they could have the C2 they’ve been looking for … forever.

watch out for Martin Erat, Alexander Radulov and Shea Weber … they’re ready and they’ll produce big.

Ryan Suter is “on the cusp of very goodness”, if i may quote myself.

Dustin “bfugly” Byfuglien has 12 goals.  i think it’ll be a blip for this year alone though, i doubt we see this type of production next year.

Martin Havlat got his 8th goal last night.  8.  are you kidding me?  little girl’s supposed to be a pt/game guy and should be closer to 18 goals in the 30 games he’s played this year.  cut ties or trade him if you can.

the poor Sharks can’t win at home and then the lost to the Isles on the road on Monday too.  i read that Nabokov hurt himself.  i wasn’t watching so i’m hoping its a rumour or its not serious.  Gene and Joe are the only reasons to be a Sharks fan this year.

Jimmy Howard will be a superstar in 2 seasons.  next year he’ll back up Ozzy in Detroit and he’ll take the reins after that.

the Jackets really impressed me last week by absolutely destroying the Wings and then they give up a total stinker to the Blues last night?  ew.  they only got 19 shots and their only goal was a shortie.  what happened the rest of the night?

i can’t believe that Ryan Malone is doing this stuff of late.  he’s not this good, at least not in my eyes.

Tomas Vanek has been a pt/game player since mid-January.  he’s up to 22 goals now and people kinda scoffed when i actually said he could still hit 30 on the season.  where are you now naysayers?

happy “oh get Riel” day.

did you see the stuff that happened to Evgeni Nabokov? i only mentioned that i heard he got hurt but that was HUGE. i’ve never seen the wire on a mask break like that before, WOW. for him to come back from that was big but i certainly wonder if his head wasnt in the game there after such a horrific incident like that. it’d be enough to make ANYONE gunshy about stepping into the twine ever again.
i’ll be watching his situation ’cause one never knows what can shake a goaltender up anymore. they certainly are a different breed.

Nabby has been sucking as of late anyway - the last thing I needed was for him to get hurt here too. I see he got the night off tonight vs. the Devils so hopefully he comes back with some piss n’ vinegar!
