Chinese Take out

February 27th, 2008 by Ian

Will Wong is a buddy of mine, a kindred spirit, a friend and a bit of a sounding board.  he’s cool.  he asked me to look at his team for him and he had gotten this far to find himself in a 4 team dogfight for a championship.  if he wins he’ll buy me lunch but maybe i should make it an evening thing so i can have a beer.  hmmm, maybe.

Will plays in a 8 team roto league with the following settings: G, A, P, +/-, PIM, PPG, PPP, SHG, GWG, SOG, W, GAA, SV, SV%, and SHO.  that’s way too many categories with way too much overlapping of stat categories for my taste (i hate redundancy) but again, nobody asked me how to set this up.  he’s battled back and forth for the top spot in the league and presently he sits in 4th, within 10 pts of a championship.  there’s daily change in the standings though and guys are bunched up in the standings in nearly every category.

let’s take a look:

C Mats Sundin TOR (A-) - he’s not leaving Toronto.  i’m writing this now on Saturday prior to the trade deadline.  this article isn’t posted until after the trade deadline and i’m daring myself to leave this prediction right here.

C Paul Stastny COL (A-) - the grade would’ve been higher if he hadn’t gotten hurt and missed some time.

LW Kristian Huselius CAL (B+) - i just don’t see him as an elite option.  next year when he’s playing in some backwater then you’ll see that he doesn’t create much offense himself but rather plays off it.

LW Cory Stillman OTW (B) - i like him a lot more in Ottawa than i did in Carolina.  he’ll fit very nicely on to their 2nd line and he’ll do well.

RW Corey Perry ANA (A-) - pure goal scorer.  big.  garbage-man getting garbage goals from within 10 feet of the net.

RW Marian Gaborik MIN (A-) - pure sniper.  he along with Perry make your RW options among the elite and the best part of your team.

D Chris Pronger ANA (A) - he does everything.  the only thing better would be to have Dion Phaneuf on your team.

D Dion Phaneuf CAL (A) - well what do ya know.  you’d really overload your team on PIMs if you had Chara too.

D Zdeno Chara BOS (B) - this is just wrong.  trade some of these PIMs away.  Chara is the guy who should go and he could land you some extra offense at LW.

D Brian Campbell SJ (B+) - Sharks fans are dancing a jig now that they have a puckmover to lead the charge from their D.

G Jean-Sebastien Giguere ANA (A-) -all he does is win and the Ducks are looking exceptional of late.

G Chris Osgood DET (B) - it would be better if he had just taken the job for the entire season but somebody has always seemed to jump up and steal starts away that should’ve gone to him.

BN Cristobal Huet WAS (B) - the Caps want to make a run at the division title and Huey may just be a short term solution for them.  i have some doubts about the number of starts he’s going to get though.

BN Shane Doan PHX (B) - he’s having a very nice year in the desert and showing the kids out there how to get this thing done.

BN Scott Gomez NYR (A-) - underrated assist man, one of the best in the game.

Waiver Wire Options

your league has no maximum games played limit but they prevent you from streaming guys into your lineup by only giving you 10 transactions (not including trades) for the season.  you’ve used up 9 of your moves so i suggest you hold off on your last move if you can in case you need it near the end of the season.  there are some viable options on your wire but that’s expected since it’s only a 10 team league and your benches are short.

some options for you to consider for your last transaction:

J.P. Dumont - i’ve loved the stats he’s been putting up all season and started recommending him early.

Tomas Vanek - one of the hottest sticks of the last couple weeks and he’s eligible at LW, your weakest position.  nice add if you can get him.

Alexander Radulov - doing amazingly well over the last month or so.  it’s too bad your RW is so strong because i’d love to have him on your team.

Anze Kopitar - +/- is his achilles heel … again.  as that team develops into its potential though this guy will be a world beater and +/- won’t be a concern.

Christopher Higgins - eligible at LW, plays in all situations, is defensively responsible and is a solid NHL’er.

Mark Streit - extra value because he gets so much PP time on the most potent PP in the league.

Bryan McCabe - people forget how much he traditionally offers to whatever team he plays for.  contrary to the belief of many, he doesn’t suck, he’s just had a really rough year.

Tobias Enstrom - assists, particularly on the PP.  and you’ll need assists after you trade away some of your PIMs.

Kevin Bieksa - solid all around All Star calibre play.  20 minutes a night and he’ll contribute across the board.

Vesa Toskala - the best goalie on the waiver wire.

Trading Options

trade Mats Sundin and Cory Stillman to I Scream DOMINATION! for Henrik Sedin and Patrick Sharp - you have 3 roto pts in reach in assists and 3 more pts available in SHG (which are hard to get).  Hank is pure assists and Sharp is the best SHG in the league right now.  you might take a hit in goals but not enough to lose any pts there.

trade Kristian Huselius and Zdeno Chara to MyCo Chops for Brendan Morrow and Tomas Vanek - if MyCo gains 50 PIMs above status quo he’ll move up 2 roto pts in PIMs and pass 2 of the guys you’re fighting for the league lead.  that’d be 1 pt off each of your competitors and 2 pts to a guy that can’t hurt you in the standings.  obviously that’s to your advantage.  Vanek is actually on the waiver wire presently but MyCo has 2 transactions left and he could use one to get Vanek and then trade him to you, you would then be able to use your last transaction to pick up a defenseman, i like Tobias Enstrom because of assists.

Conclusions

well there ya go.  you can move in assists and if you can land a lucky stroke in SHG then you could find yourself in a championship.  moves are limited though so be careful.  that Sharp deal is the key one for you.  you’re giving up a lot to get it done and it’s dependant on Sharp scoring shorthanded like he did in the beginning of the season but if you get him and then he scores you have a real shot at this.  the other trade suggestion i have is to move out some PIMs to someone who can’t hurt you in the standings but can hurt a couple of the guys you’re fighting for position with.

i’m really hoping that you’re able to do this since beer and wings depends on it.  thanks for asking me to look around Will.  i like it that friends show an interest in what i’m trying to do.
