Wednesday’s deskchair
March 26th, 2008 by IanJeff Halpern got his 17th to go along with 2 assists in the matchup that nobody cares about last night. i say that because both Fla teams are done even though only one is eliminated officially. by the way, i saw an interesting post at Dobberhockey that said that Halpern has outscored everyone else who was traded at or near the deadline. he looks to be lining up with Jokinen so you know that there’s some defensive responsibility around him. he’s worth taking a short term flyer on and he’s available in a lot of leagues.
would you rather have Jay Bouwmeester or Dennis Wideman? Bouw would’ve cost you a lot more in an auction and would disappear quicker in a draft but this season they’ve put up essentially the same stats. i see that as a call-out against Bouw more than i see it as a pimping of Wideman but if you can get the same production then give me Wideman and i’ll use that earlier pick to shore up somewhere else.
Mike Smith hurt his knee and i wouldn’t be surprised if we see a lot of Kari Ramo from here on out in TB. Ramo will be the backup next year but he’ll have a bit of value for guys still pushing for the top in their pools.
David Booth continues to produce for the cats. there looks to be opportunity for them next year and Booth is scoping out a nice office for himself.
the Sabres had a 3-1 lead in the 3rd and watched their season go down the tubes. now not only do they have to get more pts but they have to jump over a red-hot Caps team that looks the favourite to steal a spot away from the Bruins.
i don’t talk nearly enough about Jason Pominville but that dude is the backbone for that team’s offense now. talk what you want about Vanek or Afinogenov’s potential but that team’s offense will live and die with Pominville.
MAF made 31 saves to put down a shuttie on Marty Brodeur (19 saves) and the Devils. the Pens are playing great and have been without Sid for a mighty long time. Hal Gill fits in well there and we’ve yet to see what Hossa and Sid can do together. i pick them to come out of the East right now, we’ll see if i change my mind as life wears on.
Ryan Malone is a FA this summer but he was born in Pittsburgh so i’ve got to think he’d take less money to stay there. we’ll see.
Cam Ward made 42 saves to Cristobal Huet’s 25, what’s that say about which way the ice was tilted for that game? not so long ago i was saying the Canes would cave but that isn’t happening. they’re without some of their best guys but they haven’t missed a stride. the Canes will be heard from and can do some serious damage, particularly since they’ll have home ice in the first round.
Mike Green played over 31 mins yesterday. that’s Lidstrom/Pronger territory.
stupid Flyers. would you guys just die please? not literally, i wouldn’t wish that on them.
the Bruins will fall out of the playoff race and the Caps will get in. i can’t stand the Bruins either, can you tell? except for number 4, everybody loves number 4 (happy 60th dude).
Zdeno Chara is integral to the Bruins’ success. he’s back now after being away for a bit but i’m still hoping that the Caps can overcome anyway.
i don’t get why anyone would think that Matt Stajan is captain material. he may be one day but that day shouldn’t come in the next 500 or so.
i think Jordan Tootoo is a bit of a putz but i’d still love to have him on my team, a good pest is hard to find. now if only he’d score.
Jan Hlavac got serious face time with the big line last night and went 1 and 1. Alexander Radulov had 16 mins ice time and didn’t take a single shot on goal. you know i love? “Really, with Seth and Amy”. i’d love to be funny enough to do a schtick of REALLY on this topic but i don’t really have the chops.
Jan Hlavac. really. really? hmmph. not my thing. Radulov will be back and Hlavac will return to 4th line duty somewhere else (or maybe be a star in Europe sometime soon).
the Yahoo picture for Dan Ellis still makes me think he’s a hobbit. he’s not Pippin but maybe he could be Puckin.
the Detroit Red Wings snapped the feeble necks of the St Louis Blues last night. the Wings will be ready for anyone come April.
there’s no way the Canucks should’ve given up a lead in a crucial game like that to the Flames. i nearly turned the game off under the assumption that all was well with Bobby-Lou and the boys but it was not to be. i still say the playoff battle is tween the Oilers and Avs now but one never knows who could slip below the yellow line (that’s a Biggest Loser reference in case you don’t get it).
interesting to see that the Sharks still have some trouble winning at home. maybe they don’t want to finish as a higher seed after all.
by the way, keeper leagues? go prospecting for talent on the LA Kings and Phoenix Coyotes, in 2 years they’ll be the teams to beat in the West, maybe in the whole league.
Keith Yandle got 24 mins ice time and will be a phenomenal PP QB down the road.
