a fantasy hockey blog with some other stuff thrown in for good measure

weekend armchair

March 28th, 2008 by Ian

i don’t know what time i’ll have for this during the wknd so i figure i’ll throw out some random thoughts as i watch games.  i began this posting Friday at lunch in case i say something incriminating and i’ll revise and edit it when i can over the course of the wknd.

i have 2 keeper league teams and neither of them is going to win this year.  we only keep 3 guys from year to year and i have to choose between Spezza, Lecavalier, Lidstrom, Vanek, Rolston, Radulov and DiPietro for my roto team (my Brodeur’s keeper, a team name stolen from a guy who’s team i looked at last year).  i’m going to take the first 3 and just be happy about it but i flirted with the idea of locking up Radulov or DiPietro instead of Lidstrom as my 3rd option.  who am i kidding though?  Lid might arguably be the league MVP if AO doesn’t make the playoffs, he’s certainly going to win the Norris … again.

my H2H keeper (Stilletto Elbows a tribute to Gordie Howe) gets a bit trickier when selecting keeps.  i finished 4th over the season only to get smoked in the 1st round by a guy living in California, how unjust is that?  again, i keep 3 and from amongst Thornton, Nash, Gaborik, Phaneuf, Turco, Frolov, Boyes.  i’m definitely gonna go with Thornton and Nash but i’d like to add Gaborik too, which i won’t do.  my 3rd keep is probably going to be Phaneuf but Turco is an excellent option also.  it’ll be a tough call but i don’t suspect i’ll need to think about it too much before September when i need to make a final decision.

if you have a 2 bit opinion then go ahead and fire off a line to me about it.

i wanted to put something down today because things had been so busy for NHL teams last night.  the demise of the Maple Leafs (like we couldn’t see this coming guys), a heartstopper for the Caps (still breathing and i still say will be the team for the 8th slot), joy for Buffalo (still in the hunt), and Phoenix getting shut by the Kings in a big game (this is the history of the Yotes/Jets franchise; big game - stinker).

why was Mats yelling at a linesman late in a loss to the Bruins.  yes, Phil Kessel was offside on the go ahead goal that essentially ended the season but what’s the point of tearing a strip off the guy long after the play (like half a period) had gone by?  part of me respects that he wouldn’t move on and part of me just wishes that he had so that the Leafs would’ve gotten something and then just re-sign Mats in July.  i’ll grieve in my own way.

i don’t care what you say, the Bruins don’t deserve the playoffs.  Marco Sturm is their best goalscorer.  i do like Marc Savard and Zdeno Chara is the backbone of their team but otherwise i’m not much of a fan.  oh, and i like Dennis Wideman who i think has a nice future for the B’s.

earlier this week i said to a buddy that i figured it was going to be the Avs who may be on the outside looking in … if it turns out that the Preds get there.  the Preds shut out the Jackets on Friday and actually passed the Canucks in the standings.

the Canucks have dealt with BobbyLou like they think he’s their best player recently.  the had a jet ready for him to go and return from FLA to be with his family and they let him decide on the timing for it all.  Luongo got pulled against Minny but you have to make some allowances for him, he’s had a stressful week.

the silly Thrashers left Johan Hedberg in net for 7 goals that the Canes put past him Friday night.  that’s a sure way to break a man’s spirit.

Johnny Oduya got 2 assists in all of March prior to Friday night when he got 2 goals (1 on the PP).  Oduya’s best fantasy value for your team this season has been in +/-, otherwise he’s got D6 value for you but i like him anyway.

i watched most of the Oilers/Avs 3rd period and it looked like Forsberg and Stastny were the only Avalanche who were willing to go do some damage so that they’d have a playoff future.

Brad Boyes reached 40 goals getting an OT winner against Detroit.  he’s not a flash in the pan and he needs to be in keeper consideration regardless of league size.  if you’d take Rick Nash in the first 3 rounds of a draft then you need to look at Boyes there too.

JOE SAKIC WITH 5 SECONDS LEFT TIES THE SCORE FOR THE AVALANCHE!  assist to Forsberg and traffic created by Stastny.  this is a big thing for the Avs, they need this.

the poor Sabres gave up a 3-1 lead and lose in OT to a division rival.

if the Habs get the Caps in the first round … they’ll lose, Cristobal will see to it and then point to Bob Gainey as he leaves the ice after game 7.

Mark Streit has 58 FREAKING pts this season.  i’m very glad that guys turned me down whenever i offered him up several times this year, he’s outscoring Tomas Kaberle but he’s treated as a D4 in fantasy.  that’d be a mistake.

Peter Forsberg has been relatively quiet outside of this week.  now, during this week he’s had 7 pts in 3 games which exactly what they want from him at exactly the right time.

as much as i’m sure the SJ/Ana game was excellent, it had no bearing on playoff positioning so i really didn’t pay attention to it much.  at the same time though, i love both teams to go very far in the playoffs.  they might even both make the Conference Finals (yes, even ahead of Detroit).

the Bruins are in it pretty deep if they get in or not. they have to outlast the Flyers and Caps and if they do then they’re still without Savard for now.
i don’t see good things for the Bruins but you’re right about the Leafs so what do i know about the Bruins chances?
