Giguere to the Leafs
February 1st, 2010 by Ianthe Anaheim Ducks traded Jean Sebastien Giguere to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Vesa Toskala and Jason Blake.
i see this mostly as moving money from one pile to another and i don’t deal with that issue as a general rule so let’s talk about the fantasy impact of this deal. the Leafs get a vet goalie who can help show the ropes to Jonas Gustavsson who they want to be their option down the road. Monster can now handle up to half the games for the Leafs and Giggy can tutor him. it’s an expensive idea methinks but it also addresses some needs as the team thinks they exist.
the Ducks trade a contract that was hard to move, that really very few NHL teams were even interested in. for their troubles they got a vet goalie and another secondary scoring option. Toskala will be the backup behind Hiller and … he won’t have much value whatsoever. Blake actually shoots the puck a lot traditionally and that’s where most of his fantasy value lies. he’ll be a decent addition for the Ducks if he gets the opportunity on the 2nd line that he needs to get. he’ll probably get to line up with Saku Koivu and if he just pulls the trigger then at least he’ll have somebody who can send some saucers his way.
mostly though, this is a money move. the Ducks got away from Giggy’s contract and the Leafs got a veteran tutor.
